My Shady Grove Story: From Coma to Comeback!

Let me give you a little backstory. You all know I'm a traveler, fueled by my Jamaican and Cuban roots. I've bounced around the Caribbean like a beach ball and explored the wonders of Great Britain and Africa. But it was in Africa that I ran into a nasty bug called malaria. When I returned, my health took a serious nosedive. Next thing I knew, I was in a coma at Shady Grove Hospital.

The doctors gave me a 50/50 shot – and even worse, they warned my family about potential brain damage! My loved ones flew in from around the world to say their goodbyes, they brought me tons of flowers. Talk about a dramatic travel itinerary!

But guess what? I'm still here, baby! I beat the odds! And while the road to recovery was tough – relearning to speak, to care for myself – Shady Grove was there every step of the way. Thanks to their incredible care, I was able to get back to my job as an insurance agent (talk about a lifesaver!) and continue living my life.

Today, I live with an unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. It’s a challenge, sure, but I face it with the strength I gained and the unwavering support of Shady Grove. And let me tell you, don't let the term "psychiatric ward" scare you! Anything dealing with the brain is considered "psych"!

They're normalizing the conversation around mental health and providing resources, because let's face it, the statistics are staggering.
